Linking quoting and production: avoiding double data entry

August 21, 2025 · 5 min di lettura

In many small fabrication shops, quoting and production live in two separate worlds: an accepted quote is retyped, perhaps onto a different sheet or into a different system, to organise the work on the floor. Every transcription is another chance to get something wrong.

The hidden cost of typing it twice

Retyping dimensions, materials and quantities that already exist on the accepted quote is not only lost time: it is a real risk of introducing discrepancies between what was quoted and what actually gets made, with direct consequences for the job's real margin.

What integration means in practice

An integrated system makes the data on an accepted quote — bill of materials, quantities, processes required — automatically become the basis of the production order, with nothing to retype. It does not remove the need for adjustments on the floor, but it removes transcription error as a source of discrepancy.

A benefit that shows at the final costing

With consistent data across quoting and production, comparing what was planned against what was actually used becomes reliable: the differences that emerge genuinely reflect what happened in the shop, not a transcription error picked up along the way.
