Periodic reporting: from raw data to a decision

Every business that produces quotes accumulates, month by month, a growing body of data: how many quotes, how many accepted, on what terms. But a list of raw numbers does not become useful on its own — it needs a step of synthesis that turns it into guidance you can act on.

The difference between data and information

Knowing that forty quotes went out this month is data. Knowing that the win rate has fallen from 35% to 22% against last month, and that the cause appears concentrated in one product category, is information — something you can decide to act on.

The right cadence for a report

A report produced only at year end arrives too late to change course during the year. A monthly cadence, comparing against the previous month and the previous year, lets you spot trends while there is still time to act, rather than discovering them at the annual reckoning.

A few indicators, read consistently

A report trying to show everything risks never being properly read. Concentrating on a few key indicators — win rate, average margin, pipeline value — read consistently every month, produces more decision-making value than an exhaustive report consulted occasionally.
