When it comes to finishing steel, powder coating is often the first option considered, but it is not the only one: alternative surface treatments offer different durability and appearance, suited to particular settings.
Chemical conversion treatments
Some chemical treatments alter the metal surface, creating a protective layer that improves the adhesion of a subsequent finish or offers additional corrosion resistance in its own right. They are often used as preparation before painting rather than as a complete alternative to it.
Controlled oxidation and patination
For a particular look, some treatments encourage controlled oxidation of the surface, producing an appearance certain customers specifically want — an effect that has nothing to do with unwanted corrosion, being a deliberately managed process that is then stabilised.
How to put them on the quote
Every alternative to standard painting has its own times, costs and often its own suppliers. Treating each as a cost line in its own right, with its own price and lead time, avoids understating it by lumping it in with conventional painting.
